Anglo-Eastern Maritime Training Centre (AEMTC) has completed its first pilot training course focused on ammonia as a marine fuel.
Held on 24–25 November, the two-day programme brought together 26 participants from a range of shipboard roles, including Masters, Chief Engineers, senior officers and junior engineers.
Attendees travelled from across India, with additional participation from Anglo-Eastern teams based in Australia and Delhi.
The mix of ranks and regions was intended to mirror onboard operational teams expected to work with ammonia-fuelled vessels.
The course covered the properties of ammonia as a marine fuel, with emphasis on safety considerations, operational readiness and risk management.
Training combined classroom-based instruction with practical sessions at the Anglo-Eastern Maritime Academy (AEMA), allowing participants to apply procedures in a controlled environment.
Hands-on training took place at AEMA in Karjat using the Academy’s LNG/ammonia bunkering skid, which enables simulation of bunkering operations.

The facility includes transfer pipelines, safety interlocks, inerting systems, emergency shutdown functions, gas detection interfaces and operational controls, allowing trainees to practise both routine and emergency scenarios associated with ammonia handling.
Aalok Sharma, Group Director of Training at Anglo-Eastern, remarked: “This pilot course is a logical and deliberate step as we prepare to take delivery of our first ammonia-fuelled ship. As we navigate our journey toward the successful adoption of a multi-fuel future in the maritime industry, we move forward with both pride and caution. Our goal is to ensure that we continually learn while we teach, cultivating an environment of growth and innovation.
“The team has dedicated significant time and resources to upskill, keeping a strong focus on the invaluable feedback from seafarers – those who will be at the forefront of these operations. We as an industry must continue to seek these essential insights, as we refine our approach and enhance the training programs.”
