The Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) Secretary General & CEO, David Loosley, and Women’s International Shipping & Trading AssociationWISTA President, Elpi Petraki, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Maritime Cyprus to strengthen collaboration on key workforce issues in the maritime sector.
The agreement aims to address long-term workforce sustainability as the industry transitions to alternative fuels, automation, and digitalisation.
It emphasises the need for “safe, fair, inclusive and attractive conditions” to maintain a resilient labour force.
A BIMCO representative said: “By signing the MOU, our two organisations will collaborate closely on initiatives that aim to ensure that seafaring and other maritime careers are safe, sustainable, and offer an aspirational career for decades ahead. Enabling the workforce, and to particularly see women thrive, in an evolving global industry is a top priority.”

They will also share information, including publications and data, that may benefit their respective members.
Additionally, the two organisations will explore opportunities to co-develop training programmes, seminars, and educational initiatives aimed at enhancing industry knowledge and skills.
The partnership will also focus on addressing shared challenges impacting the maritime workforce.
