Cryosafe Services has signed a partnership agreement with bound4blue to explore the integration of bound4blue’s eSAIL® wind propulsion system on LNG Carrier vessels, combining LNG operational expertise with proven wind-assist technology.
The collaboration will focus on evaluating eSAIL® configuration and integration options specific to LNG Carriers, addressing operational and technical factors including vessel airdraft, cargo operations, gangway access, mooring lines, and compliance with LNG terminals and FSRUs.
bound4blue identifies LNG Carriers as a strong candidate for wind propulsion owing to their higher operating speeds, available deck space, and long worldwide trading routes.
The eSAIL® system generates lift by drawing air across an aerodynamic surface, producing thrust up to seven times greater than a rigid sail of equivalent size.
The technology holds DNV Type Approval and has recently been installed on vessels operated by Odfjell, Eastern Pacific Shipping, and Maersk Tankers.
For LNG Carrier owners and charterers, a correctly configured installation is intended to reduce fuel consumption and emissions whilst supporting compliance with EU ETS, CII, FuelEU Maritime, and the proposed IMO GFI framework.
