CGI launches bold MaritimeTwin to slash ship emissions
CGI has secured UK Government funding through the SEEDS (Sustainability Exploration and Environmental Data Science) programme to develop MaritimeTwin.

The MaritimeTwin is a new digital twin platform aimed at cutting GHG emissions from shipping by up to 15 per cent.

The initiative, led by CGI alongside Maritime UK and the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) at Heriot-Watt University, will use real-time satellite data and digital twin modelling to optimise shipping routes and reduce environmental impact.

It supports the UK’s Clean Maritime Plan and broader net-zero targets. CGI will draw on its existing DataTwin360 and EcoHub platforms.

The system will integrate environmental data—including weather, ocean currents and port conditions—with operational models to help vessel operators plan more efficient routes, monitor fuel use, and track emissions.

Earlier-stage modelling will be supported by machine-learning tools capable of adapting to new data over time.

The prototype aims to give operators a decision-support tool to balance performance with emissions reduction.

Mattie Yeta, CGI UK’s Chief Sustainability Officer, said: “This award enables the development of a demonstrator that leverages real-time data to deliver tangible impact across the maritime sector.

“This project addresses the urgent need for maritime decarbonisation but also strengthens the UK’s position as a leader in clean maritime technology, driving economic growth and creating high-skilled jobs in the sector.”

Chris Shirling-Rooke MBE, Chief Executive of Maritime UK, added: “Our focus is on ensuring that end users and industry stakeholders are meaningfully engaged and represented throughout the project, providing forums where they can help to shape a solution that is both technically robust and market viable.

“By providing a clear strategy and forums for engagement, we seek to align innovation with real-world industry needs.”
