CMA CGM expands UK rail footprint with Freightliner deal
Freightliner Ltd has officially joined the CMA CGM Group, marking a new chapter for the UK’s leading intermodal rail freight operator.

The acquisition underscores both companies’ commitment to a stronger, more integrated, and sustainable intermodal network in the UK and globally.

Freightliner operates 10 terminals, approximately 1.4 million rail slots, and a fleet of 2,000 wagons, including one of the UK’s largest electric locomotive fleets.

It will continue as a standalone, multi-user, multi-customer service provider, delivering a national sustainable network that cuts thousands of tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Heavy Haul Rail, formerly part of Freightliner Group, will continue independently under its existing ownership, as will European operations Rotterdam Rail Feeding and Freightliner PL and DE.

In December 2025, Hapag-Lloyd contracted Chinese shipbuilder CIMC Raffles to construct eight 4,500-TEU container vessels, scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029, in a deal worth more than $500 million.
