GMI has ordered hydrogen energy systems for two new 3,000-deadweight-tonnage (DWT) bulk carriers that are scheduled to enter service in 2029.
The vessels will be built by Showgule Shipyards Ltd. in India and are expected to operate primarily in Norwegian coastal waters.
Under the contract, eCap Marine will equip both vessels with its eCap H2EPS integrated hydrogen energy power system.
Each vessel will receive compressed hydrogen storage, a 1.2 MW PEM fuel cell system, alongside power management, control and safety systems for maritime applications.
The order follows ongoing projects between GMI and eCap Marine and expands their work on hydrogen-powered vessels.

The newbuilds will operate in a market where alternative-fuel propulsion is gaining attention as shipowners seek to reduce emissions from coastal shipping.
Norway’s extensive coastal and fjord network has also made the development of lower-emission vessel technologies a particular focus.
Torstein Holvik, CEO of GMI, said: “Our ambition is to become a leading owner of hydrogen-powered vessels. These newbuilds are another important step in that direction, and we are pleased to continue this journey with eCap Marine.”
Lars Ravens, Managing Director of eCap Marine, stated: “The renewed order from GMI demonstrates the growing confidence in hydrogen as a viable solution for maritime applications. We are pleased to support GMI’s ambition and bring our experience from previous projects into these new vessels.”
