The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has strongly condemned an attack on the tanker MT SETTEBELLO (IMO 9162916), flagged in Palau, off the coast of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz.
The incident resulted in the deaths of three seafarers. The vessel reportedly sustained a projectile strike, triggering a fire on board.
The incident is one of several in the region, with the IMO confirming 44 attacks on international shipping and 14 seafarer fatalities since 28 February 2026 in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, said: “I strongly condemn any act from any party that endangers the lives of seafarers and the safety of international shipping. This is simply unacceptable. My thoughts are with the families of the three seafarers who lost their lives and with all those awaiting news of the crew members.”

He added that the protection of seafarers and freedom of navigation must remain a priority, referencing conclusions from the IMO Council’s extraordinary session.
Dominguez stated: “All actions affecting international shipping must fully respect international law and the safety of life at sea. The protection of seafarers is a shared responsibility that must remain paramount.”
The IMO said it is monitoring developments closely and has called for a full and transparent investigation into the incident.
