Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries), Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., “K” LINE, MOL, NYK Line, JMU, and NSY have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a standardised design framework for the initial development of liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carriers and next-generation alternative fuel vessels, including ammonia-powered ships.
MILES Co., Ltd. (formerly MI LNG Company) will lead the initial design, enabling other Japanese shipyards to carry out functional and production designs based on these common blueprints.
The seven companies aim to collaborate with domestic shipyards to deliver globally competitive ship designs.
“K” LINE, MOL, and NYK Line will invest in MILES to accelerate cross-industry collaboration and promote construction across multiple Japanese shipyards using the standardised framework.
JMU and NSY are also investing to ensure the designs and specifications provided by MILES are widely adopted, reinforcing the competitiveness of the Japanese shipbuilding sector.
Through this initiative, the companies seek to advance sustainable shipping and contribute to a carbon-neutral society.
