Sumitomo Corporation, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE), and NYK Bulkship (Asia) Pte. Ltd. (NYK Line) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly conduct a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study and explore ownership options for a new-build ammonia bunkering vessel (N-ABV) for operations in Singapore.
The MoU supports the ammonia value chain initiative led by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Energy Market Authority (EMA), which aims to accelerate adoption of low- or zero-carbon ammonia for both power generation and shipping, bolstering the city-state’s energy transition and maritime decarbonisation strategies.
In October 2025, MPA and EMA appointed a Keppel-led consortium to deliver the next phase of the project, providing low- or zero-carbon ammonia solutions on Jurong Island.
As a member of the consortium and the sole recipient of the Research and Innovation grant under MPA’s Maritime Innovation and Technology Fund (MINT Fund), Sumitomo will lead the FEED study, developing the technical and commercial foundations for future bunkering operations.
Under the MoU, Sumitomo, “K” LINE and NYK Line will collaborate on detailed N-ABV studies covering basic vessel design, technical specifications, safety and operational requirements, and the ownership structure, tailored to Singapore’s emerging ammonia bunker market.
