KR, HD Hyundai Samho complete AI shipbuilding project
Korean Register (KR) and HD Hyundai Samho marked the conclusion of their joint AI development project at a signing ceremony held at Posidonia 2026.

The year-long collaboration, initiated under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June 2025, focused on embedding AI technology into shipbuilding design and structural analysis workflows.

The project delivered two core outputs. The first is an AI-powered optimisation tool for hull support arrangement, replacing a process that previously required repeated structural analysis with a model capable of near real-time evaluation, enabling engineers to rapidly assess multiple configurations and identify the optimal setup.

The second is a domain-specific Large Language Model (LLM) service built to streamline the management and retrieval of complex shipyard design documents.

Developed in an on-premise environment to satisfy shipyard security requirements, the system organises accumulated expertise and makes specialist-level knowledge accessible to a broader range of personnel.

Hakmu Shim, Executive Vice President of HD Hyundai Samho, said: “This project has demonstrated the real potential of AI to transform how we approach design and analysis at the shipyard. We will continue to broaden the application of AI in practice, with a focus on enhancing design productivity, strengthening engineering capabilities, and advancing our digital transformation.”

Daeheon Kim, Executive Vice President of KR, added: “This project marks an important step toward modernizing the traditionally labor-intensive processes of shipyard design and analysis through cutting-edge AI. KR will continue to develop and deliver customized AI solutions that create tangible value for our clients.”

Both parties said they intend to accelerate AI adoption across further design and operational areas following the project’s conclusion.
