A.P. Moller-Maersk (Maersk) has signed a framework agreement with Avenir Marine Limited to supply liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG), with first volumes expected in 2027.
The deal gives Maersk early access to a fuel that can significantly reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions, addressing one of the main constraints in scaling low-carbon shipping: reliable fuel supply.
At the same time, the company has trialled multiple e-methanol blends, evaluating operational performance and cost sensitivity.
These trials are not just experimental, they reflect the practical challenge of integrating alternative fuels across a global fleet while keeping shipping commercially viable.

Different operators face different cost thresholds for abatement, and testing multiple blends allows Maersk to build operational flexibility into its customer offerings.
The move illustrates a strategic approach to decarbonisation. Securing bio-LNG tackles supply chain risk, while e-methanol trials provide insight into how the fleet can operate under variable fuel costs and availability.
By combining both, Maersk is effectively creating a roadmap for deploying low-carbon fuels at scale, balancing environmental targets with operational realities.
This signals that the next phase of shipping decarbonisation will depend as much on fuel strategy and supply certainty as on vessel technology.
