NYK, BHP strengthen partnership on low-carbon vessels
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Australia’s BHP Group Ltd, originally signed in June 2022.

The renewed MoU outlines key initiatives, including continued joint research on ammonia dual-fuel vessel technologies, the advancement of biofuel trials and other low-carbon shipping measures, and enhanced safety through NYK Line’s provision of high-quality vessel tonnage for the maritime transport of various dry bulk cargoes.

By establishing a bilateral collaboration model, NYK Line and BHP aim to drive progress in the dry bulk industry, focusing on decarbonisation and operational safety.

Emma Roberts, Vice President Maritime & Supply Chain Excellence, BHP, said: “BHP welcomes the opportunity to build on our shared history with long-term strategic partner, NYK Line. We have a shared commitment to be innovative and to accelerate industry safety, technology, and sustainability performance across the maritime sector. As one of the world’s largest dry bulk charterers, BHP has a deep interest in working alongside our partners to advance a safer, technology-driven, and efficient shipping industry.”

Hiroaki Nishiyama, Managing Executive Officer, Chief Executive of Dry Bulk Division, NYK Line, stated: “We are delighted to strengthen our strategic partnership with BHP further and work together to promote decarbonisation and enhance safe operations in the dry bulk industry. Amid an uncertain outlook for environmental regulations, we will combine the strengths of both companies to accelerate the development of next-generation environmental technologies and steadily advance toward achieving our net-zero target by 2050.”

Recently, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions announced that it will provide integrated systems for a new LNG bunkering vessel being built at Jiangnan Shipyard in China for Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) Energy Shanghai Co.
