NYK, JERA to transport low-carbon ammonia to Japan
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) Bulkship (Asia) Pte. Ltd., part of the NYK Group in Singapore, has signed two heads of agreement with JERA Co., Inc. for time-charter contracts covering ammonia carriers.

The agreements advance plans to transport low-carbon ammonia produced at JERA’s Blue Point Project in Louisiana to JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

The shipments are expected to be Japan’s first commercial fuel ammonia deliveries.

Ammonia, traditionally used in fertilizers and chemicals, is emerging as a carbon-free energy source, including as marine fuel.

NYK and JERA have been working to ensure the safe transport of fuel ammonia by large vessels.

The agreements accelerate commercialisation efforts, supporting a stable supply of low-carbon ammonia and Japan’s energy transition.

The NYK Group has extensive experience in operation, safety management, and cargo handling for ammonia transport and continues to develop a value chain for next-generation fuels through marine shipping.

Recently, NYK signed a long-term time-charter agreement for an offshore wind crew transfer vessel (CTV) with Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy LLC, a joint venture formed by JERA Nex bp Japan LLC, Electric Power Development Co., Ltd., Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc., and Itochu Corporation.
