Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) Bulkship (Asia) Pte. Ltd., part of the NYK Group in Singapore, has signed two heads of agreement with JERA Co., Inc. for time-charter contracts covering ammonia carriers.
The agreements advance plans to transport low-carbon ammonia produced at JERA’s Blue Point Project in Louisiana to JERA’s Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
The shipments are expected to be Japan’s first commercial fuel ammonia deliveries.
Ammonia, traditionally used in fertilizers and chemicals, is emerging as a carbon-free energy source, including as marine fuel.
NYK and JERA have been working to ensure the safe transport of fuel ammonia by large vessels.
