Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., MISC Berhad, and China LNG Shipping (Holdings) Limited held a naming ceremony for two new LNG carriers for QatarEnergy at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) in Ulsan, South Korea.

One vessel was named Sharq, after an area east of Doha, while the other was Shra’ouh, after a Qatari island. The ceremony was attended by Takaya Soga, president & CEO of NYK, among others.

These vessels are the seventh and eighth of 12 new LNG carriers ordered by the joint venture for QatarEnergy, one of the world’s largest LNG providers.

Sharq is scheduled to begin transporting LNG worldwide in December, while Shra’ouh will enter service in January 2026. The NYK Group will provide ship-management services for Shra’ouh.

Both vessels are powered by two X-DF 2.1 iCER dual-fuel engines capable of using fuel oil and boil-off gas.

They are also equipped with an air lubrication system and a reliquefaction device that re-liquefies surplus boil-off gas for the cargo tanks, promoting fuel efficiency and reducing GHG emissions.

Both vessels have a cargo capacity of approximately 174,000 cubic metres (m³) and measure around 299 metres in length with a beam of 46.40 metres.

They are powered by X-DF 2.1 iCER dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engines and were built at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan shipyard.

The NYK Group’s medium-term management plan, Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026, focuses on deepening core businesses and investing in growth areas.

The Energy Business Division has prioritised the LNG/LPG carrier sector, leveraging NYK’s experience and networks to help ensure a stable energy supply for Japan.

Recently, the International Bunker Industry Association and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a framework for closer cooperation across marine energy and shipping.
