Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has deepened its stake in Oceanic Constellations as unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and marine simulation technologies promise smarter, autonomous maritime operations.
Oceanic Constellations Inc. (OC) is positioning USVs as a core technology for next-generation marine infrastructure, enabling ocean surveillance, disaster prevention, and maritime communications while boosting the competitiveness of the wider maritime industry.
Beyond its USV platforms, OC has developed integrated environmental simulation technologies that accurately replicate marine conditions, providing critical data and decision support for autonomous operations.

These simulations are also being applied to offshore recovery systems for reusable rockets, under Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Space Strategy Fund initiative, demonstrating the dual-use potential of maritime intelligence technologies.
NYK has strengthened its collaboration with OC through a series of agreements, including a December 2025 service contract for software development of integrated simulations and scenario validation, and an earlier joint demonstration agreement with Keihin Dock Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company.
Through these initiatives and its recent equity investment, NYK aims to deepen its technical expertise in autonomous and data-driven maritime systems, accelerate its space-related business applications, and advance co-creation efforts that address societal challenges related to the oceans.
In November 2025, NYK renewed a Memorandum of Understanding with Australia’s BHP Group Ltd, originally signed in June 2022.
