NYK and nine industry partners have launched a five-year research and development project to develop an integrated simulation platform aimed at creating safer, more sustainable, and competitive next-generation ships.
The project, titled “Development of Integrated Simulation Platform for Sustainable and Competitive Maritime Industry,” is a collaboration of 10 leading maritime organisations, including MTI Co., Ltd., a member of the NYK Group.
It has been adopted under Japan’s Key and Advanced Technology R&D through the Cross Community Collaboration Program (K Program) and will run until September 2030.
The initiative addresses pressing challenges in the maritime sector, including stricter environmental regulations, a shrinking workforce, and rising demand for advanced vessels.

Its integrated simulation platform will model the entire ship lifecycle—from design and construction to operation and supply chain management—allowing optimisation of specifications and construction plans through virtual engineering.
Advanced seasonal forecasting capabilities will also be incorporated, enabling the prediction of weather and sea conditions, including extreme events such as typhoons, up to three months in advance.
These forecasts aim to enhance operational safety while supporting more efficient ship design and delivery.
By combining digital innovation with traditional shipbuilding processes, the project represents a major step toward a more sustainable, efficient, and competitive maritime industry.
