EST-Floattech to supply battery system for CSOV plus
Siemens Energy has contracted EST-Floattech to supply a battery system for a new Commissioning Service Operation Vessel (CSOV) being built by Marco Polo Marine in Batam, Indonesia.

EST-Floattech will provide an Octopus High Energy battery system with more than 1 MWh of capacity for the vessel, supporting hybrid propulsion and dynamic positioning (DP) operations.

Siemens Energy is acting as system integrator for the CSOV Plus’ hybrid power plant. The project marks EST-Floattech’s first contract in Singapore and Taiwan.

Designed by Salt Ship Design, the vessel is being developed for both offshore wind and oil and gas operations. It will feature a 100-tonne active heave-compensated crane and a motion-compensated gangway for walk-to-work transfers in significant wave heights of up to 3.0 metres.

Construction began in Batam during the second quarter of 2026, with delivery scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.

The battery system will operate alongside the vessel’s generator sets and Siemens Energy’s BlueDrive PlusC system. During DP operations, the batteries will provide spinning reserve and absorb changes in power demand, allowing fewer generators to operate and helping those in use run closer to their optimum load.

The vessel has also been designed to accommodate a future battery expansion to 20 MWh, which could enable fully electric sailing.

The modular architecture of the Octopus system allows additional battery modules to be integrated with the existing battery management system, with space for the expansion incorporated into the vessel’s design.

Once delivered, the CSOV Plus will be operated by PKR Offshore (PKRO), Marco Polo Marine’s Taiwan-based subsidiary, under a multi-year framework agreement with Siemens Gamesa covering offshore wind projects in Taiwanese waters.

PKRO already operates the MP Wind Archer, its first CSOV, which entered service in Taiwan in 2025.

Walter van der Pennen, Chief Commercial Officer at EST-Floattech, said: “We are grateful for the trust that Siemens Energy and Marco Polo Marine have placed in us. Furthermore, we thank our partner Durapower for their role in bringing about our first project together in Singapore.

“Offshore wind support vessels in Asia-Pacific have demanding operating profiles: long periods on DP, constant load changes and multi-year charters. A battery system that supports those operations reliably, and that can be extended when the operator is ready to go fully electric, is exactly what the Octopus Series was designed for. We look forward to seeing the CSOV Plus at work in Taiwanese waters.”
