US, Bahrain push UN action on Hormuz shipping
The United States and Bahrain are seeking United Nations-backed action to restore safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, as Washington advances plans for a multinational maritime security coalition.

According to Reuters, the two countries have circulated a draft resolution at the UN Security Council calling for an end to attacks on commercial shipping and for measures to safeguard freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway. The proposal is expected to form part of a wider effort to stabilise maritime operations in the Gulf.

The draft resolution urges compliance with international maritime law and raises the prospect of further measures should threats to commercial vessels persist.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global trade, linking Gulf ports with international shipping routes and carrying a significant share of the world’s energy cargoes.

Alongside diplomatic efforts, the US is working to establish a maritime coalition aimed at coordinating security operations and supporting the safe passage of merchant vessels.

The initiative is intended to restore confidence among shipowners, insurers and crews, many of whom remain cautious about resuming transits.

The push for coordinated action comes as vessel traffic through the Strait remains below normal levels, with operators continuing to assess security risks amid ongoing regional tensions.

For the maritime industry, the developments underline the growing intersection between geopolitics and shipping operations, with implications for vessel routing, insurance costs and supply chain reliability.
