Wärtsilä maps 2026 trends in decarbonisation & digitalisation
As the maritime industry approaches 2026, Wärtsilä has identified four trends set to reshape global shipping, driving competitiveness, efficiency, and sustainability for vessel owners and operators worldwide.

Wärtsilä highlighted that lifecycle optimisation is taking centre stage as owners move from short-term fixes to holistic strategies that integrate environmental impact, operational efficiency, and economic viability across a vessel’s entire life.

Collaboration and transparency between owners, operators, and OEMs are essential for smarter investment decisions and preserving asset value.

Additionally, flexible decarbonisation strategies are becoming increasingly critical. Tailored approaches that match each vessel’s operational profile, available fuels, and business priorities help fleets remain competitive and compliant amid evolving technology and regulations.

Solutions such as fuel-flexible engines, hybrid propulsion, and methane slip mitigation are enabling owners to future-proof operations.

Digitalisation, big data, and analytics are unlocking real-time insights for increasingly complex vessels, reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and operational costs.

While adoption is growing, challenges like data governance and integration remain, though the path forward is clear.

Regulatory uncertainty continues to influence strategic planning. Despite delays in the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Net-Zero Framework, regional initiatives like the EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) and FuelEU Maritime are shaping shipping, making robust compliance and reporting protocols essential.

Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine, emphasises that collaboration is key: “Decarbonisation is a team effort. The maritime ecosystem is full of ingenuity and technical excellence. By working together across operators, OEMs, ports, fuel providers, and regulators, we can drive digitalisation and decarbonisation hand in hand and build a cleaner, smarter future for global shipping.”

Recently, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, part of technology group Wärtsilä, announced that it will provide integrated systems for a new LNG bunkering vessel being built at Jiangnan Shipyard in China for Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) Energy Shanghai Co.
