IMO marks World Maritime Day 2025
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is commemorating World Maritime Day on 25 September, placing a strong emphasis on environmental protection—an essential part of its longstanding mandate.

This year’s central theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity,” underscores the pivotal role the ocean plays in supporting economies, sustaining marine life, and helping to moderate global climate.

The IMO is marking World Maritime Day with special events at its London headquarters, including symbolic gestures such as lighting its building in blue, reminding the global community of our collective responsibility to protect marine environments.

With more than 80 per cent of world trade transported via the sea, sustainable management of our oceans is critical to global economic and environmental well-being.

The IMO has set robust rules for shipping that aim to tackle marine pollution, climate change impacts, and the spread of invasive species. Its framework—supported by conventions such as MARPOL and the Ballast Water Management Convention—relies on active cooperation from 176 member states worldwide, and is complemented by technical assistance programmes to help nations enforce these regulations effectively.

The UK Government, represented by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Maritime Minister Keir Mather, has echoed the IMO’s message with its own pledge for safety, security, and sustainability.

Over the past year, Britain has taken the lead in advancing technological solutions, supporting seafarer welfare, and investing in green maritime innovation, such as through the UK Maritime Innovation Hub and the UKSHORE programme.

According to MCA Chief Executive Virginia McVea: “The theme for World Maritime Day 2025 asks us to reflect on the ocean’s vital role in the world economy and recognise the central role shipping has in the protection of the marine environment.

“At the MCA we are reaffirming our commitment to protecting lives, advancing maritime technologies, and preventing pollution across our seas. We continue to honour the unwavering commitment of seafarers who are the driving force behind global trade every day.”

World Maritime Day also connects initiatives across the broader United Nations framework, such as the recently concluded High Seas Treaty on marine biodiversity and negotiations around a binding instrument to limit plastic pollution in oceans.

Looking forward, the IMO will focus on “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence” for 2026 and 2027—a drive to translate global rules into meaningful action at sea.
