WSC flags rapid growth in dual-fuel shipping fleet
The World Shipping Council has released an updated version of its Dual-Fuel Fleet Dashboard, tracking the global liner sector’s transition towards vessels capable of operating on lower-emission and renewable fuels.

As of March 2026, the number of dual-fuel containerships and vehicle carriers in operation has reached 440, representing a 65 per cent year-on-year increase. The orderbook has also expanded, with 764 dual-fuel vessels now on order.

Across newbuild activity, 78 per cent of containership orders are dual-fuel capable, alongside 94 per cent of vehicle carrier orders and 17 per cent of other fleet segments.

In total, 1,204 dual-fuel containerships and vehicle carriers have either been delivered or are on order, representing more than $180 billion in private sector investment.

Joe Kramek, President & CEO of the World Shipping Council, said: “These vessels are long-term investments built with flexibility in mind. Ships built today will operate for decades, and the ability to operate on different fuel pathways helps reduce risk, strengthen energy security, and support more resilient global supply chains.

“Continued constructive engagement at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) remains essential to provide the global regulatory certainty needed to scale investment in alternative fuels.”
